He was 83 and lived in Ridgefield, Conn.

A half-century ago, a German company called Deru made beautifully crafted figures of various animals with an imaginative, origami-like technique of crimping/sewing/riveting a single piece of leather. These are now quite hard to find, and of the various “species” produced, the elephant was the finest (this is an example of one of the larger of the two elephant figures made). The way a manipulated piece of leather can so accurately and expressively capture “elephantness” is an amazing thing to behold.

My beautiful niece Nora was born last summer. This was the invitation for her mom’s baby shower, whose only request was that there be no pink!

Nicole recently visited the Lancaster Quilt & Textile Museum, before it closed. Sadly, it’s now only open for special events. These pictures are of some of the quilts that at one time hung in the Esprit headquarters.

Lancaster County Amish Quilts —The Lancaster Quilt & Textile Museum’s permanent collection showcases quilts produced by Amish women in Lancaster County between the 1870s and the 1940s. The Quilt & Textile Museum’s permanent exhibition is what many scholars consider to be the finest collection of authentic late 19th-20th century Amish Quilts indigenous to this region. Formerly known as the “Esprit Collection”, it was the brainchild of Doug Tompkins, a founder of the Esprit Corporation, who began collecting the quilts during the 1970s. In 2008, six of the quilts from the museum’s collection were listed as National Treasures by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

I received some beautiful gifts from the clothing line Ada Ada. I love how their designs are simple yet have subtle details, like a snap or layers. The clothes don’t overpower the child wearing them which is something that is kind of rare with kid’s clothing. (Clothing supplied by Ada Ada. Thank you Ada Ada!).
